HMNZS Manawanui Runs Aground in Samoa

APIA, SAMOA – The Royal New Zealand Navy’s dive and survey vessel, HMNZS Manawanui, ran aground near the southern coast of Upolu, Samoa on Saturday evening during a routine reef survey. All 78 personnel on board were safely evacuated to life rafts and accounted for, according to Maritime Component Commander, Commodore Shane Arndell.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has emphasized that the safety of the crew remains their top priority. Rescue operations were promptly initiated, involving coordination between the NZDF and the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ). A Royal New Zealand Air Force P-8 Poseidon aircraft was deployed to assist in the rescue efforts.

Commodore Shane Arndell stated, “We are relieved that all personnel are safe and accounted for. Our focus now is on ensuring their well-being and assessing the situation to prevent any environmental impact.”

The NZDF is working closely with local authorities to manage the situation and plan the recovery of HMNZS Manawanui. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
