Unity and Action at Waipapa Marae: Māori Activists Gather for Change

Auckland, August 31, 2024 – The Waipapa Marae at Auckland University was a hive of activity as it hosted the “Activation Hui,” a significant gathering aimed at mobilizing Māori activists and supporters. The event attracted a diverse crowd, including prominent figures such as Hone Harawira, Annette Sykes, Mereana Pitman, Ken Mair, and Tame Iti with over 2000 in attendance.

The hui was organized to address critical issues facing the Māori community and to strategize on countering policies perceived as anti-Māori by the current coalition government. Green Party MP Teanau Tuiono, who attended as an observer, emphasized the importance of such gatherings in fostering unity and collective action. He noted the historical significance of the event, drawing parallels to a similar hui called by activist Eva Rickard in the mid-90s.

Eru Kapa-Kingi, one of the organizers, outlined the objectives of the hui, highlighting the need for a coordinated approach to tackle the challenges faced by Māori communities. The hui provided a platform for participants to share their experiences, discuss strategies, and build networks to support their activism.

The event featured passionate speeches, workshops, and discussions, all aimed at empowering the Māori community and ensuring their voices are heard in the political arena. The presence of veteran activists added a sense of continuity and inspiration, reminding attendees of the long history of Māori activism and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.

Many non-Māori were in attendance such as John Minto and Andrew Judd including representaives from Asians Supporting Tino Rangatiratanga , there was a palpable sense of determination and solidarity among the participants. The Activation Hui at Waipapa Marae served as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of the Māori community and their unwavering commitment to advocating for their rights and interests.
